When was the last time you watched a movie, read a book, or listened to an album labeled “Christian”?
Sometimes in the busyness of life, we just don’t think about it. Or we just didn’t know about it. Or we worry that it’s not good quality. Maybe we need to be a little more intentional…
So why should we support Christian entertainment?
Because God wants the body of Christ to be unified, and because we are warned that whatever gets most of our time and attention impacts us, either for good or bad.
— In Philippians 4:8, the Bible talks about filling our minds with things that are good and uplifting.
— In Romans 12:2, the Bible tells believers not to conform to the ways of the world.
— In Colossians 3:2. the Bible shows us that we are to set our minds on things above, not worldly things.
— In Hebrews 10:24, the Bible says we are to encourage each other, to spur one another toward love and good deeds.
And what about the benefits of faith-based entertainment?
— God gets the glory, rather than the people involved.
— Consumers come away encouraged and uplifted.
— Opportunities for family discussions arise.
Some people say that secular entertainment is not all bad, and I agree. Yet at times, it can be hard to sort through the junk to get to the good stuff. Plus, we are much more likely to compromise, saying things like “There are only a couple of cuss words”, or “They don’t show the entire body without clothes”. But the Bible says that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough (Gal 5:9), which means a little wickedness corrupts the whole thing.
In faith-based entertainment, we don’t have to be concerned about what sinful things might occur, what words or images may tempt us to stray from our faith. We can know we’ll come away with no regrets before God.
In fact, I would suggest that we need to make Christian entertainment a priority in our families.
Like church ministries and missionaries, these authors, publishers, actors, producers, and musicians are devoting their lives to spreading the Gospel. When we support them with time, money, and word of mouth, we are sowing into the Kingdom of Heaven.
